Bill Sawyer doesn’t ponder the marriage vow he made 63 years ago to love his wife “in sickness and in health.”
But he’s certainly lived it.
For his loving care of his wife, Dody, whose multiple sclerosis has worsened over 25 years, Bill was today named the winner of Mercy Center with the Aging’s first Celebrating Family Caregivers Award, at a luncheon at Oak Hill Country Club.
Bill’s caregiving is featured in the Democrat and Chronicle’s print edition today, on Page 1C. He was one of four finalists for the award, which was created to acknowledge the large amount of unpaid caregiving that takes place in the Rochester area.
“It’s time for us to honor the caregivers,” Mercy Center with the Aging’s Sister Anne Maloy, said earlier. “It’s an area that we haven’t celebrated in the community.”
Each of the finalists was recognized today, including Kathleen Gefell of Irondequoit, Judith Ann Schimp of Chili and Beverly Ewald of Webster.
