AN elderly man is believed to have smothered his sick wife in a mercy killing pact.

Margaret Smith, 81, was bedridden with multiple sclerosis and arthritis.

She lived with her husband, Robert, 71, at their semi-detached home in Orpington, Kent.

A neighbour said: "They were a very loving couple."

A 71-year-old man will appear at Bromley Magistrates Court today charged with her murder.
