Two reports from the recent American Academy of Neurology show researchers
looking into the effects of a common nutritional supplement, Alpha-Lipoic
Acid. ALA suppresses EAE by inhibiting T cell migration into the spinal
cord and does so partly by inhibiting matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9)
activity. Effective dosage appeared to be at 1200 mg/day; at 600 mg/day,
there was no increase in the serum blood level of ALA. Abstracts on the
two studies are here
and here.
