18 graduate from school for those with disabilities

Eighteen students graduated from the Transition Center on Thursday in a ceremony at the Fort Worth school district Board Room.

Family members and friends filled the room.

The Transition Center is a school for young people with disabilities such as autism, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities and mental retardation.

The Transition Center does not name a valedictorian or salutatorian.

Assistant Principal Terry Mashburn said the emphasis is on individuals striving to be all that they can be.

Mashburn said a few students will go on to competitive jobs. Some will work in shops geared for people with disabilities.

Graduates of the Transition Center Mall included: Rosa Castanon, Porsha Gardner, LaMarcus Monshay Green, Zeljko Gusa, Alkael Shenea Jones, Suprena B. Law, Mariano Lopez, Ivory Needam, ReShawd Jerome Perkins, Michelle N. Sanchez, Robert Severn and Barry Allen Smith.

Graduates in the Transitional Skills Program, which includes some classes at Tarrant County College, are: Daniel Belgrave, Tommie Gordon Gilbert III, Krystal Huey-You, Joanne Marie Melman, Pablo Antonio Ruiz and Erin Elizabeth Vickers.

The Transition Center is at 5100 El Campo Ave. It has about 100 students.
