Carers 'save cost of another NHS'

8 May 2002

Replacing carers with paid staff would cost the equivalent of another NHS, a new report suggests.

Carers are saving the Government more than £57 billion, an average of £10,000 each, says the charity, Carers UK. Chief executive Diana Whitworth commented, "When you put a monetary value on carers' contribution to the economy, it is quite startling. It is clear that, without carers, our NHS and social care systems could not survive".

In its report, Without Us, Carers UK calls for greater recognition of carers, help through tax and benefits reforms, health and social care planning, and a new status reflecting they are neither employed or unemployed.
