An article
in the "Journal of Neuroscience Nursing" (free registration required on
Medscape) provides advice to MS nurses in helping their patients use disease-modifying
drugs to optimize their health and quality of life. The article describes
how to work with patients to learn about the treatment options, set realistic
expectations, learn how to administer treatment (e.g., self-injection),
overcome obstacles to adherence, evaluate treatment benefits, and reconsider
treatment choices if the desired outcomes aren't seen. Although this article
is geared toward nurses, I think people with MS might find it useful as
well. At the very least, it gives an idea of the types of help, education
and support one can and should expect from an MS nurse when going on one
of the MS drugs.
