This latest statement was issued following a meeting in Exeter on Thursday, 13 June 2002
Mike O'Donovan, chief executive of the Multiple Sclerosis Society said, "We welcomed the opportunity to discuss our trustees' recommendation to close the Orcombeleigh Care Hotel in Exmouth.
We presented in detail the reasons behind the proposal and we listened carefully to other views which were expressed. We are very aware of how upsetting the recommendation has been to some people.
We remain committed to giving high priority to increasing resources for the respite care and other needs of people severely affected by MS.
However, we have made it clear that we are willing to consider any viable proposal for the home to continue and have offered to provide whatever information and assistance we can to develop such a plan."
Michael Willis, a co-founder of Orcombeleigh, and others opposing its closure met Mr O'Donovan today.
Said Mr Willis, "We believe together a way can be found to allow Orcombeleigh Care Hotel to remain open and are already working on a proposal to put to the Society."
