Serono to make announcement about MS-drug Rebif trials on Friday

ZURICH (AFX) - Serono SA said it will make an announcement at 7.00 am on Friday about its clinical trials for Rebif, its drug for multiple sclerosis.

A webcast on the topic is planned for later in the day, Serono said. Rebif has been pitted against Avonex from Biogen Inc and Betaferon from Schering AG in a head-to-head clinical trial in the U.S. According to the most recent statements, the trial is to be completed in July, and results are to be announced sometime in the third quarter.

If Rebif wins the trial, the U.S. FDA most likely will approve much broader use of it, said analysts.
