Following delays in the setting up the risk sharing scheme for extending access to beta interferon and glatiramer acetate, the Department of Health (DoH) has issued a briefing note reminding Strategic Health Authorities (SHA) and Primary Care Trusts (PCT) of their obligations.
The note reminds SHAs and PCTs that they “should be taking steps to prepare for implementation [of prescribing centres], to ensure that prescriptions may be initiated at the earliest opportunity.” It emphasises that “there is a statutory obligation to fund the cost of drugs themselves and any infrastructure costs needed to assess and support patients.” The DoH expects SHA to have nominated lead officials who will oversee the scheme in their area by the end of July and to be in a position to report on progress by 15 September.
The Health Service Circular, HSC 2002/004, which described how the scheme should operate, was issued in February for implementation from May.
