MEDFORD, Ore. - David Lander, best
known for playing Squiggy on the TV sitcom "Laverne & Shirley," says
he sometimes faked being drunk to hide his multiple sclerosis.
Lander revealed his illness in 1999.
He hid the disease for 16 years, fearing Hollywood would reject him.
"Having it and not telling anybody
is downright lonely because there's nobody's shoulder to cry on," Lander
said. He was in Medford on Sunday to talk to a group of about 200 people
who suffer from the chronic disease of the central nervous system.
"I started to notice that crossing
the street was like an Olympic event," he said, recalling the early days
of his illness.
The actor played Andrew "Squiggy"
Squiggman on "Laverne & Shirley" during its 1976-83 run on ABC.
