A Los Angeles college has placed a 4mph speed limit on wheelchairs.
Those who break the limit at Valley College face being ticketed or even expelled.
Campus officials set the speed limit in the hope of keeping pedestrians from being hurt.
"It's a safety issue, pure and simple," said Tom Jacobsmeyer, vice president of administration.
He proposed the regulation after seeing a student nearly hit by a woman "going very fast" in a wheelchair.
But some students find the regulation absurd. "It's like a bad joke," said Lynn Eller, one of several students who use a wheelchair or electric cart on campus. "People who aren't disabled should be warned to be considerate of wheelchair users."
Campus officials said they will warn offenders at first, but chronic
violators could be ticketed, suspended or expelled.
