Sunday January 28 1:46 AM ET

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) - Brazilian television actor Fausto Rocha, a star of soap operas in the 1970s and 1980s, has died of multiple sclerosis, his wife said. He was 59.

Rocha died Saturday at the Sao Jose hospital in Joinville, some 500 miles southwest of Rio de Janeiro.

He was diagnosed with the disease in 1998.

"From then on, we only saw his health deteriorate every day," his wife, Diceia, was quoted as saying by Estado news agency.

Rocha also played theater and movie parts, though never in the main role.
