Getting round unfamiliar towns in a wheelchair may become easier.
A research team at University College, Northampton, is working on a computerised navigation system which automatically identifies town centre problems like cobbled streets, steps and steep gradients. The prototype has been modelled on Northampton but Professor Hugh Matthews says the techniques could be readily adapted to other places. Eventually they could be used in urban planning.
