Cannabis-based products should be made available for pain relief here as soon as Britain sanctions the use of the drug, Mr Gay Mitchell, the Fine Gael health spokesman, said yesterday.
Research has shown that the drug could provide some remission for people in acute pain, particularly in the case of multiple sclerosis.
Mr Mitchell said it would not be advisable for this State to sanction the drug before Britain did as all the research was being conducted in Britain.
Mr Mitchell tabled a question on
the issue for the Minister for Health, Mr Martin, yesterday and asked him
to seek the views of the Irish Medicines Board on the use of the drug.
