First Award Presented at Joint Stockmen's Convention
LAS CRUCES - Secretary of Agriculture Frank A. DuBois was presented with the first "Bud's Contract Award" at the Joint Stockmen's Convention in Albuquerque on Saturday, December 8, 2001. The late Bud Eppers, past president of New Mexico Public Lands Council (NMPLC), created the award that was carried on by the new president, Mike Casabonne. "It was a distinct honor and privilege to have worked with Bud over the years, so to be presented with an award created by him is an extraordinary honor in itself," says Secretary DuBois.
"Bud wanted to present this award to someone who has been a friend to the public land grazing industry but wasn't able to get it done before he left us. The NMPLC wanted to comply with Bud's wishes in presenting the award," says Casabonne. Epper's wife, Alice, presented the award to DuBois during a dinner reception and awards presentation at the Joint Stockmen's Convention. Alice Eppers says, "Frank has always been a true champion for the livestock industry and has never turned down a request. Without his expertise and detailed advice, we wouldn't have succeeded in passing legislation pertaining to the industry."
Bud's Contract Award will be presented to a recipient at the Joint Stockmen's Convention each year. A large bronze featuring the engraved names of the recipients will be displayed at New Mexico State University in the Joe Skeen Building.
