RATHER than posting some small replacement car parts to a keen Escort Mk1 owner, Marc Lawrence told the man he would drive them over himself – to Malta.

This conversation sparked a 5,000-mile jaunt through Europe and helped raise more than £2,500 for the Letchworth branch of the MS Trust.

Marc, from Boswell Drive, Ickleford, took Letchworth co-driver Martin Bellia, father-and-son team Lee and Jon Ward from Hitchin and two souped-up 1972 Mk1 Ford Escorts on the tour after the Maltese owners’ club member said he wanted to see Marc’s Mondeo-engined Escort.

The Sporting Escort Owners’ Club guys set out on the two-week jaunt, visiting European Formula One circuits including Magny Cours, Le Mans, Monza, Imola, San Marino and Monte Carlo, and winding through the southern Ardennes mountains.

“The scenery we saw was phenomenal,” said Marc, 52.

“A good friend of mine has multiple sclerosis, so I thought if we don’t do it for him, then we should do it for other people like him.”

Marc and his cohorts handed over the money to the MS Trust branch at their offices in the Spirella building on Friday.

Said the trust’s fundraiser Hannah Asquith: “The MS Trust is delighted that this amount of money is going towards supporting the MS community and MS nurses.”
