Home Secretary Jack Straw yesterday
welcomed a debate on the legalisation of cannabis but held out little prospect
that the Government would relax the law on possession of soft drugs.
Straw, however, promised that medical
use of cannabis compounds to alleviate the suffering of those with conditions
such as Multiple Sclerosis would be legalised if the trials currently under
way showed it to be effective.
John Prescott also came out against
decriminalisation.
