From Crain's Health Pulse: The Medicare Rights Center issued a report urging the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to change its interpretation of the Medicare law that denies coverage of mobility devices, such as power wheelchairs, for use outside the home. Under current policy, the program pays 80% of the cost of a power wheelchair for a person who needs it to move from a bedroom to kitchen, but not for an individual who requires assistance to leave home for medical care, shopping, or employment. The report, "Forcing Isolation: Medicare's 'In the Home' Coverage Standard for Wheelchairs," is available on the advocacy's web site.
