The UK's outstanding scientific research record is at risk from "bargain basement" funding, says the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee.
The Department of Education and Skills has provided an extra £30 million for 2002/3 but the committee says that is far short of the £200 million plus needed. Its report says the Research and Assessment Exercise, introduced by the Government last year, has produced some improvements but is damaging university staff morale. "It stands accused of distorting research practice, ruining academic careers and contributing to the closure of university departments".
