The EPVA Mets, a wheelchair softball team co-sponsored by the Mets and the Queens-based Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association, will conduct team tryouts May 8 at 6 p.m. at Bulova Field, which is adjacent to Bulova Corporate Center at 75-20 Astoria Blvd. in Jackson Heights.
Weekly practices will be every Wednesday at 6 p.m. starting April 18 and will continue through August. All people with lower-extremity impairments that prevent them from playing able-bodied softball are eligible to play wheelchair softball. Paralysis because of a spinal-cord injury, amputation, multiple sclerosis and polio are some of the common disabilities found in the sport.
The EPVA Mets regularly conduct clinics to introduce wheelchair softball to children with disabilities. For more information about the team or clinics, call Star Bravo at 718-803-3782, ext. 309.
