Alpha Interferon (IFN-A) is one of a group of proteins called interferons. Interferons act as chemical messages or cytokines between cells. Three interferons have so far been discovered, alpha, beta and gamma all of which have immune modulating effects.
IFN-A is an anti-viral and anti-tumour agent. It is used to treat cancer, HIV and hepatitis C and trials are currently ongoing with Multiple Sclerosis to see whether it might be beneficial.
